Swami Satyananda

Anyone who has lain on a mat at the end of class while a teacher's voice walked their attention around the body, right thumb, right forefinger, has practiced something this lineage systematized. Swami Satyananda Saraswati built the Bihar School of Yoga at Munger into modern yoga's most institutional teaching body, with a publishing arm whose orange-bound manuals sit on teachers' shelves worldwide, and codified yoga nidra, the guided "yogic sleep" that has since traveled far beyond yoga itself.¹² The lineage's history also contains one of yoga's most serious reckonings, the findings of an Australian Royal Commission about its ashram at Mangrove Mountain, addressed below.

From Almora to Munger

Satyananda was born in 1923 in Almora, in the Himalayan foothills of present-day Uttarakhand, and left home at twenty, in 1943, to find a teacher.¹ He found Swami Sivananda at Rishikesh and was initiated into the Dashnami sannyasa order on 12 September 1947.¹ Nine more years of ashram work followed (Sivananda's training method was mostly work) until 1956, when he received instruction in kriya yoga and, as the lineage tells it, his master's mandate to spread yoga "from door to door and shore to shore."¹

After years of wandering, he settled at Munger, a river town in Bihar, and founded the Bihar School of Yoga there in 1963.² The two decades that followed were relentless: teaching tours across India and abroad, the building of the Ganga Darshan campus on a hill over the Ganges, and a stream of systematic textbooks that gave English-speaking yoga much of its reference literature. Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha, the graded posture manual still used as a syllabus; Yoga Nidra; Four Chapters on Freedom, his Yoga Sutras commentary; Kundalini Tantra.³⁴

In 1988 he renounced his own institution, handing it to his successor Swami Niranjanananda, and settled at Rikhia in Jharkhand in 1989 as a retreatant, serving the surrounding villages; Rikhiapeeth grew up around him, with Swami Satyasangananda as its head from 2007. He died there on 5 December 2009.¹⁵

The Bihar method

Bihar Yoga, the tradition's own name for itself, is systematic where other lineages are stylistic: an integrated syllabus of asana, pranayama, cleansing practices, yoga nidra and meditation, taught residentially in an ashram culture of early hours and karma yoga rather than through weekend certifications.² Its flagship trainings are months long, the four-month Yogic Studies course at Munger among them, and its degree-granting wing, Bihar Yoga Bharati, was founded as a university-style institute for yogic studies.² Yoga nidra is the signature export: a fixed-format guided practice of resolve, rotation of consciousness, breath awareness and imagery that Satyananda distilled from tantric sources into something any tired modern person can do lying down.⁴

Mangrove Mountain

The lineage's Australian ashram at Mangrove Mountain, New South Wales, was the subject of Case Study 21 of Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, with public hearings in December 2014. The Commission heard from eleven survivors of child sexual abuse at the ashram in the 1970s and 80s; its leader in those years, Swami Akhandananda, had been convicted in 1989 and imprisoned. The Commission's report found the ashram had no child-protection practices in that era and a "culture of violence and humiliation," heard testimony of allegations against Satyananda himself, and found that aspects of the organization's practices "may have served to foster and mask" the abuse; it also criticized the response of the Indian headquarters as defensive.⁶⁷ At the hearings the Australian ashram's chief executive apologized to survivors, and on the report's release in 2016 the ashram, by then renamed Mangrove Yoga, apologized "without reservation for the appalling acts of sexual and physical abuse committed during the 1970s and 1980s."⁸ The Related coverage section links to the Commission's own records and contemporary reporting.

The lineage today

The Bihar School of Yoga continues at Ganga Darshan, Munger, under Swami Niranjanananda, with Bihar Yoga Bharati, the Yoga Publications Trust and a research foundation alongside; in 2019 it received India's Prime Minister's Award for outstanding contribution to yoga, and its residential programs run through 2026 and beyond.² Rikhiapeeth continues Satyananda's later service mission in Jharkhand.⁵ In the West the tradition is carried by long-trained individual teachers, often under the name Satyananda Yoga or Bihar Yoga, and by the practice that outgrew the lineage entirely: if a class ends in a long guided yoga nidra, this is where it came from.
